The apostle Paul wrote: “...so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them....” Romans 12:5-6

Western Iowa Synod has a Disability Resource Team

Purpose:

The Disability Resource Team assists congregations in becoming more aware of attitudinal and structural barriers affecting persons with physical and mental disabilities, their families, and caregivers. It also encourages congregations to see the gifts of persons with disabilities and to envision our potential partnership in ministry.

Focus:

1) Develop awareness of the gifts and needs of persons with disabilities.

2) Include persons with disabilities as full participants in the congregations’ ministry.

3) Join in advocating the elimination of attitudinal and structural barriers that prevent full ministry participation for persons with disabilities.

4) Provide human and informational assistance to congregations regarding all of the above.

Biennially we award a congregation in our synod with the “Open Roof Award” based on Mark 2:3-4. All congregations that have not won the award are eligible to apply. For more information, contact a team member or look at www.wisynod.org and click on the Disability Resource link.

Our team has a PowerPoint and presentation ready to share with your congregation. We are willing to talk to adult forums, councils, small groups, or during the worship service.

Disability Resource Team Mission

The Disability Resource Team encourages churches to become more aware of including persons with disabilities in their worship and activities, as well as making the facilities more accessible to those with disabilities. They are eager to consult with congregations and individuals and offer resources and ideas. Contact the Disability Resource Team via e-mail or through the synod office at 712-732-4968.
